Grow them in the same tent and they go their separate ways from the very first step and do not converge again. The reason is one single gene, and the clearest way to see what it does is to follow the two packs along every stage they share: the breeding that made them, the seed, the seedling, the flower room, the harvest, the jar, the lab bench and the law. The ratios quoted as examples below are taken from the range at https://calmcbdseeds.com, and that range runs 1:1, 2:1 and 20:1 with a top line at about 30 to one; the biology is the same whichever shop the seeds come from.

Before the Seed Exists

Cannabis decides whether it will produce THC or CBD at one position on the genome. The gene there comes in two forms: one codes the enzyme that converts the shared starting molecule into THCA, the other the enzyme that converts it into CBDA. Every plant carries two copies, one inherited from each parent, and the combination fixes the chemotype. Two THC copies give a THC-dominant plant. Two CBD copies make a CBD-dominant one. One of each makes a balanced plant, since the two versions are codominant and neither overrides the other.

The 1:1 pack was made by pairing two balanced plants, each holding one copy of each form. The 20:1 pack was bred by crossing two plants which both hold two CBD copies and not a single THC copy in either of them. That one difference at the cross determines everything afterwards, and it is fully in the seed before it is packed.

The Mendelian Split

Cross two balanced plants and the offspring sort out by the oldest arithmetic in genetics: a quarter get two THC copies, a quarter get two CBD copies, half inherit one of each. In a pack of 10 seeds that means, on average, two or three THC-dominant seeds, two or three CBD-dominant ones, and about five genuine balanced ones. The pack is sold by its parents, and for half its contents the label fits; for the other half it is a description of something else. Calm CBD Seeds prints the expected split on each balanced line, so the buyer sees ahead of planting that a share of the plants are going to differ from the headline ratio.

The 20:1 pack carries no such split. Each seed received a CBD copy from both parent, every plant will be CBD-dominant, and the ratio on the foil holds to all of them, give or take the ordinary differences in the amount of much total cannabinoid any given plant produces. Breeders describe such lines “breed true” for chemotype; the term means exactly this lack of variation.

Stage Three: The Seedling Tray

At this stage the two packs appear alike once more, and the resemblance holds further than most growers expect. Chemotype shows no mark on a seedling. Leaf, colour, stem spacing and growth rate are governed by other genes altogether, and the three kinds of plant in the 1:1 pack come up indistinguishably from one another and from every plant in the 20:1 pack.

The one practical distinction during this stage comes from ancestry rather than chemotype. Lines with strong hemp ancestry, and that covers a number of less developed CBD-dominant lines, tend to grow taller and branch less. A well-worked 20:1 line behaves like a normal modern hybrid; a early-generation one may still shows the hemp in its shape. Neither tendency says a thing about the ratio to come.

Frost, Smell and the Wrong Conclusions

In flower the two packs begin to give clues, and the majority of them mislead. Trichome density is the usual one a grower judges, and it was a reasonable rule: first-generation CBD-dominant strains showed visibly less frost than their THC counterparts, an unwanted inheritance from hemp. Modern lines have mostly closed that gap, and a lightly frosted plant from the 20:1 pack can still test exactly where the foil promised. Resin density and chemotype are inherited separately.

Smell is an even poorer guide. The terpene chemistry lives on yet different genes, so the THC-dominant plant sitting in the 1:1 pack can be indistinguishable to the balanced one next to it, and either can be identical to a plant from the 20:1 pack. People who try to sort a balanced pack by nose in week eight are guessing, and that is no any better than not sorting at all.

Stage Five: The Harvest Window

Here the two packs differ in a way that favours the grower of the 20:1 pack and also the CBD-dominant plants sitting in the 1:1 pack. CBDA degrades rather slowly than THCA, so a CBD-dominant plant left a week beyond its peak keeps the bulk of its cannabinoid load, where a THC-dominant one under the same neglect has already begun converting THC to CBN. The cloudy guidance nonetheless applies; it applies on account of the terpenes, which degrade on any plant regardless the chemotype, and a late, rushed CBD flower smells of very little whatever the lab result says.

What Mixing Does

The 20:1 pack can go into one jar. Each plant in it holds roughly the same ratio, and mixing them alters nothing anyone would notice. The 1:1 pack should never be treated that way. Blend its 10 plants in a single jar and the result become a ratio that no foil ever promised, skewed by whichever plants grew biggest, and no later test can untangle what went in.

The habit that saves the trouble is dull: harvest the balanced pack plant by plant, cure each apart, label them, and try each one one at a time rather than after anything is combined. It is the one point in the whole grow where the three chemotypes of plant in the 1:1 pack can yet be kept apart short of a laboratory, and then only because every one is still in its own container.

Stage Seven: The Lab Report

Send a few grams from every jar to a laboratory and the two packs finally are legible. For the 20:1 pack the certificates arrive back grouped closely near the stated ratio, differing mainly in total output rather than in proportion. For the 1:1 pack they come back in three groups: some plants with nearly all THC, a few with nearly all CBD, and the majority sitting around one to one. Nothing of this pattern is a failure; it is the breeder’s cross written out as numbers.

Over-the-counter test kits exist for growers without a lab, and most show whether THC is present rather than how much. That is sufficient to pull the THC-dominant plants away of a balanced pack and not to assign a ratio to the rest, which suits the commonest use: finding out what of the 10 jars is going to catch out someone.

Hemp Threshold Versus Chemotype

The last place where the two packs separate is in law, and it trips growers who assumed “CBD” meant “hemp”. The majority of jurisdictions define hemp by a THC ceiling, a fraction of a percent of dry weight, with the exact figure varying from country and sometimes year to year. A plant from the 20:1 pack making twenty percent CBD at twenty to one at the same time produces about one percent THC, which is many times above the majority of thresholds. Certified hemp lines are selected to hold total cannabinoid output low so the THC share stays under the line at maturity; CBD seed lines are bred for high output and allow the THC scale with it. A shop that offers only a ratio is selling a flower line; anyone who needs a legal hemp crop should ask for a tested THC figure at maturity and order nothing that cannot provide one.

Past the threshold issue, the word on the foil changes very little in the law on the seed as such. Where holding cannabis seeds is lawful and germinating them is not, the 1:1 pack and the 20:1 pack fall in the same position as every other pack. Where the plant is legal outright, the decision between them is the grower’s and nothing else’s. None of this page is legal advice, and the rule that applies is the one in the place the seed is going to be sown, not the one where it was bought.

Place two packs of CBD seeds next to each other, one marked 1:1 and the other 20:1, and the two look the same: the same brand packaging, same seed count, seeds that nobody’s eye can tell apart.
